Understanding How to keep braces clean

There are so many fantastic benefits from orthodontic treatment in London, such as improved confidence and overall oral health, but what else can happen? Are there any side effects when it comes to straightening your teeth with braces? Our friendly dental team here at Whites Dental would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding brace. We provide a range of brace treatments including Ceramic brace, Invisalign brace, Damon Fast Brace, clear brace and lingual brace. We are based in London Waterloo, adjacent to Southwark Station or a quick walk from Waterloo rail station (about 5min) or a 10min walk from London Bridge station.

Sometimes, throughout orthodontic treatment you can experience slight discoloration around the brace where you maybe haven’t been able to manoeuvre your toothbrush around every angle – we understand that it’s a bit of a tricky job. Naturally, with newly straightened teeth it seems only appropriate to want your teeth to be just as white as they are straight, for that gleaming ‘Hollywood’ smile.

After many months of waiting and having gone through all the hard work of wearing brace, some orthodontic patients are extremely disappointed to see that their teeth are a complete mess after the brace come off. Improper oral hygiene and not turning up to dental check-ups can lead to yellow teeth after brace, to white spot lesion, and even cavities on the tooth surfaces. Getting orthodontic treatment can put you at risk of oral disease, as the teeth are harder to clean, and certain tooth surfaces remain hidden due to brackets on top of them, causing yellowness of the teeth after the brace come off. Damage can also be caused from the appliance itself. In order to avoid yellow teeth after braces or any other kind of damages once the braces come off, you must go to your check-ups. The dentist will be able to see any systemic problems that can cause the unwanted yellowness or cavities during orthodontic treatment, and will be able to raise awareness about them before they cause dental problems.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″ css=”.vc_custom_1603698972671{padding-top: 15px !important;padding-bottom: 15px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][dfd_single_image image_size=”medium” image=”10177″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]The other fundamental way to avoid white spot lesions after brace is to upgrade your at home oral hygiene regiment. Flossing will be harder than usual, but indispensable in your fight against tooth decay during braces. If you are finding flossing impossible, then try an inter-dental toothbrush to replace the dental floss. These special toothbrushes can get in between the teeth and the wires and brackets, cleaning out food remains. Removing plaque and food debris is a major step in making sure that your teeth are not yellow after brace. Given the fact that keeping your teeth clean when wearing brace is unvaryingly more difficult, it’s heavily recommended that you eat and drink healthily so as to ensure that your teeth are also strong and healthy. As such, you should avoid foods and drinks that are particularly bad for the health of your teeth, such as caffeine and sports drinks.

Sticky foods should be avoided at all cost when wearing brace as they can damage both your braces and teeth, while sugar should be limited as much as possible to avoid the damaging effects that too much sugar can have on oral health.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column dfd_column_responsive_enable=”dfd-column-responsive-enable” col_shadow=”box_shadow_enable:disable|shadow_horizontal:0|shadow_vertical:15|shadow_blur:50|shadow_spread:0|box_shadow_color:rgba(0%2C0%2C0%2C0.35)” col_shadow_hover=”box_shadow_enable:disable|shadow_horizontal:0|shadow_vertical:15|shadow_blur:50|shadow_spread:0|box_shadow_color:rgba(0%2C0%2C0%2C0.35)” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column_text]In addition, make sure that you avoid fizzy drinks too, as the acid within can wear down your enamel. Some extra food you should limit while wearing brace include caramel, caramel, chips, and chewing gum. By maintaining a healthy diet, the risks of developing issues with your teeth and gum are significantly lowered and will allow your smile to appear beautiful immediately after your brace are removed. But if you already have some stains once the braces have come off and are wondering what can be done, there is no need to worry. Your orthodontist will recommend a hygiene session after your orthodontic treatment regardless of whether or not your teeth are yellow after braces, and this will remove any stains and plaque on your teeth. You can also undergo a whitening session to whiten the shade of your teeth, and you can even have a whitening session in the comfort of your own home, with at home whitening kits.

It is always advised to whiten teeth after brace, instead of before. Teeth whitening before brace can result in uneven shades across the surface of your teeth from where wires and brackets sit, and from shifting teeth. One of the common reason patients seek out brace is to fix crooked teeth. Crooked teeth mean your teeth usually overlap, therefore if you whiten your teeth before brace, the whitening agent will not be able to reach some areas of your teeth. As your teeth shift during your orthodontic treatment, this will generate an uneven shade spectrum across your smile. Orthodontists typically recommend that patients wait for around six months after the braces are removed before whitening their teeth. There are two reasons why this is recommended; saliva and tooth sensitivity.

Wearing braces for a few months or longer can cause teeth to feel weak for a short period of time, so giving yourself time to adjust will make teeth whitening more effective and comfortable. In a lot of cases, a patient’s saliva is enough to reduce the intensity of discolorations and differences in shades after their brace are removed. However, if six months pass and your teeth are still looking discoloured, teeth whitening after brace may be necessary to create a whiter, healthier-looking smile.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″ css=”.vc_custom_1603698972671{padding-top: 15px !important;padding-bottom: 15px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/4″][dfd_single_image image_size=”medium” image=”10131″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]If you interested in getting braces for yourself or someone you know, please book a free consultation with us and talk to one of our dental professionals. Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential towards ensuring that your smile looks beautiful once the braces are taken off. In this article we will focus on answering the question- “How do I brush my teeth with braces?” In order to keep your teeth clean with braces, there are various things that you’re going to want to do and foods that you should avoid throughout the teeth straightening process. You must keep your mouth and teeth as healthy as possible. It shouldn’t be too difficult to keep your teeth clean during this process, but the brackets may make it somewhat tricky to brush in the same manner as you always have until you get used to the changes. Fortunately, brushing with braces is really no more difficult than it is normally. You can use a regular toothbrush, with regular bristles. You may need to replace it more often though, because the metal brackets will wear the bristles down faster. Be gentle, take care and do not put too much pressure on teeth.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text]You should try avoid sticky foods when wearing braces as they can damage both your braces and teeth, while sugar should be limited as much as possible to avoid the harmful effects that too much sugar can have on oral health. Make sure that you avoid fizzy drinks as well, as the acid within can wear down your enamel. Some extra food you should limit while wearing braces include popcorn, caramel, chips, and chewing gum. How to maintain good dental hygiene with braces-

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Before you brush, rinse with water. This can help loosen any food lodged in and around the braces. When you’re ready, start by brushing at the gum line at a 45-degree angle. Once you are done brushing the gum line, place the toothbrush on top of the brackets, angling down to brush on top of each bracket. Then, move the toothbrush to brush the bottom of the bracket and the wire, angling the toothbrush up.

Take your time. Make sure to brush every tooth at the gum line as well as on top and at the bottom of the brackets. That way you will reach the majority of the tooth’s surface and help remove plaque and food debris. Even kids who are old enough to brush on their own may need help until they are comfortable angling the toothbrush properly and have learned how to brush their teeth with braces.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Dental visits every six months

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]When your braces look shiny and clean (and you can see the edges of the brackets), you will know that you have done a fine job. You only have to brush and floss twice a day, like anybody else, or more frequently if you have consumed a lot of sugary drinks and snacks. Ideally it is recommended to visit your dentist for a check-up and cleaning every six months. The dentist can point out areas that need more attention, and help make sure you’re keeping your teeth healthy and clean. And you will also be able to inform your doctor of any unexpected changes to your teeth or mouth.

The treatment can last anywhere between 6-8 months to over a year. On completion, not only will your teeth look different when you smile, you will likely also notice that your teeth and your bite isn’t the same as what it was before, changing the way you chew food. As your treatment commences and your teeth start to gradually move towards their straightened positions, your mouth and bite will adapt to chewing and biting in a more natural manner. At Whites Dental in London Waterloo, our orthodontic dentists offer a range of adult braces treatments including Damon braces, lingual braces and Invisalign braces.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text]Sometimes, throughout orthodontic treatment you can experience slight discoloration around the braces where you perhaps haven’t been able to manoeuvre your toothbrush around every angle – we understand that it’s a bit of a tricky job. Naturally, with newly straightened teeth it seems only fitting to want your teeth to be just as white as they are straight, for that glistening ‘Hollywood’ smile. You’ve gone through all the hard work of wearing braces, so what’s the best way to get whiter teeth to finish the job? You’ve reached the finish line and you have bid your braces a (somewhat fond) farewell, to unveil the beautifully straight smile beneath. If you’ve had your braces removed, you’ll know that nothing quite beats the feeling of being able to show off your new smile, feeling the smooth surface of your brace-free teeth, and enjoying that first bite of a nice crisp apple (without it being shredded by brackets!).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text]There are several different methods on offer to you when considering cosmetic dental treatments like teeth whitening, but as wearing braces can cause a temporary weakness in the teeth, you have to be a little more careful with how you choose to whiten your teeth post-treatment. As your teeth shift during your orthodontic treatment, this will create an uneven shade spectrum across your smile. Orthodontists often recommend that their patients wait about six months after their braces are removed to whiten their teeth. There are two reasons why this is recommended; tooth sensitivity and saliva[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column width=”1/4″][dfd_single_image image=”10407″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text css=””]Stained teeth can make adolescent and adult patients feel insecure about their smile, even after completing orthodontic treatment to straighten their teeth. After all, you’ve gone through the work of wearing braces, how can you get whiter teeth to create an all-around beautiful smile? This is where professional teeth whitening comes in to help restore stained teeth to a bright, white smile. It is always recommended to opt to whiten teeth after braces and you can see the results of before and after teeth whitening, and get advice from our team during consultations. Teeth whitening before braces can result in uneven shades across the surface of teeth from where brackets and wires sit, and from shifting teeth. One of the common reasons patients seek out braces is to fix crooked teeth. Crooked teeth often overlap, which means if you whiten your teeth before braces, the whitening agent is unable to reach some areas of the teeth. As your teeth shift during your orthodontic treatment, this will create an uneven shade spectrum across your smile.

Orthodontists often recommend that their patients wait about six months after their braces are removed to whiten their teeth. In many cases, a patient’s saliva will be enough to reduce the intensity of discolorations and differences in shades after their braces are removed. However, if six months pass and your teeth are still looking discolored, teeth whitening after braces may be necessary to create a whiter, healthier-looking smile.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1544440458796{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1723371192676{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]For optimal cosmetic improvement and oral health, teeth whitening should always be supervised or performed by a dental health professional. Not only is professional teeth whitening more effective than at-home treatments, but it is also safer. Dental professionals can spot areas of demineralized enamel, signs of gum disease, or tooth decay that may have been hidden by braces. Teeth whitening can give a fantastic result when performed in a dental clinic, or with a take-home kit issued by your orthodontist – the best advice is to head over to your nearest practice and get their expertise on whitening your smile, to avoid any unnecessary discomfort, risk or disappointment!

Hygiene essentials when wearing braces

Now that you have had braces placed on your teeth, you likely have a number of questions about how to properly take care of these braces as well as your teeth for the duration that you are supposed to wear them. Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential towards ensuring that your smile looks beautiful once the braces are taken off. In this article we will focus on answering questions such as – “How do I keep my teeth clean with braces?” and “How many times a day should I brush my teeth with braces?”.

In order to keep your teeth clean with braces, there are various things that you’re going to want to do and foods that you should avoid throughout the teeth straightening process. It shouldn’t be too difficult to keep your teeth clean during this process, but the brackets may make it somewhat tricky to brush in the same manner as you always have until you get used to the changes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column width=”1/4″][dfd_single_image image=”10432″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

Maintaining dental health with braces

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]One of the ways to avoid damage is by maintaining good dental habits while wearing braces.. Make sure you brush your teeth at least three times a day, preferably after each meal, using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Along with brushing, it’s essential that you floss regularly. Pay extra attention to the space around your braces and remove all traces of food. Use floss to clean between your teeth, as well as a floss threader, to remove food particles from between braces and wires at least twice every day. It’s not only important to see your orthodontist, but also your dentist for regular cleanings and check-ups. Dental cleaning are essential to remove any plaque build-up, which contributes to cavities.

Your dentist may also recommend using a fluoride mouthwash to help strengthen your teeth and lower the risk of tooth decay. The mouthwash and toothpaste you use should contain fluoride, as this ingredient helps keep your teeth white and clean.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1544440458796{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1623407744850{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]By maintaining a good cleaning technique when you have your braces on, your teeth should be healthy once they come off.  Moreover, learning different chewing techniques could also help prevent damage to braces. Instead of chewing food with your front teeth, it might be easier to chew with your back teeth, which are stronger. This can prevent damage to your braces when eating thicker meats or breads. Given the fact that keeping your teeth clean when wearing braces is invariably more difficult, it’s heavily recommended that you eat and drink healthily so as to ensure that your teeth are also strong and healthy. As such, you should avoid foods and beverages that are notably bad for the health of your teeth, such as caffeine and sports drinks.

Sticky foods should always be avoided when wearing braces as they can damage both your braces and teeth, while sugar should be limited as much as possible to avoid the harmful effects that too much sugar can have on oral health. Make sure that you avoid fizzy drinks as well, as the acid within can wear down your enamel. Some extra food you should limit while wearing braces include popcorn, caramel, chips, and chewing gum. By maintaining a healthy diet, the risks of developing issues with your teeth and gum are substantially lowered and will allow your smile to appear beautiful immediately after your braces are removed.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1544440458796{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Even kids who are old enough to brush on their own may need help until they are comfortable angling the toothbrush properly and have learned how to brush their teeth with braces.

Millions of people across the world use orthodontic braces to align or straighten their teeth or help with other dental problems such as gaps, underbite, or overbite. However, you can be left with stains, cavities or infected gum tissue, if proper brushing techniques are not followed. Dental braces make brushing difficult because food particles and plaque can adhere to the brackets and teeth and must be removed regularly. In this article, we will discuss how to brush teeth properly if you are wearing braces.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1544440458796{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Choose your toothbrush

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1598347302355{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Though a regular toothbrush will work, you might consider an electric or sonic toothbrush designed for cleaning around braces, and make sure you are using the right amount of pressure, allowing the head to rotate completely. This will provide a more effective cleaning and save you time. If you decide to use a regular toothbrush, you will have to ensure that you brush your teeth with the toothbrush bristles angled upwards and also downwards in order to get a good clean over your orthodontic braces. Remember that you have several sides to your teeth — outer (near your cheek or lip), inner (facing your tongue), crown (on the bottom teeth, it’s the part of the tooth facing the top of your mouth and on the top teeth, it’s the part facing your tongue). All sides must be cleaned, so get a toothbrush small and flexible enough to move easily around your mouth.

Before starting to brush your teeth- rinse your mouth. It can be helpful to swish some water around in your mouth to dislodge some of the loose food particles out of your mouth. Spit, and repeat. You’ll also want to rinse with water after brushing. Warm water can soothe teeth and soften bristles when you have the bands on your braces changed. Remember to not brush too hard or the brackets could get damaged. When you are ready, start by brushing at the gum line at a 45-degree angle. Even kids who are old enough to brush on their own may need help until they are comfortable angling the toothbrush properly and have learned how to brush their teeth with braces.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column width=”1/4″][dfd_single_image image=”10429″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

Focus on other areas of your mouth too

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Your mouth is full of germs and plaque that feed gingivitis. You also need to brush and massage your gums, cheeks and tongue.

  • Using your toothbrush, do a gentle vertical brushing in the direction of the brackets to start brushing the gums above (or below) your teeth.
  • Then, turn the brush 180 degrees to face your cheek (the cheek is harder to brush).
  • Turn the brush downwards and brush the soft bottom and gums where your tongue sits. Brush underneath your tongue, and then the roof of your mouth.
  • Finally, stick your tongue out and give it a good brush. Spit and rinse your mouth and toothbrush.

Cleaning Between Teeth

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1598348684165{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Flossing is a crucial step towards keeping teeth healthy. It can seem like a difficult task to do with braces. But, there are different options you may want to consider to make flossing a little easier- a floss threader, plackers- which are like floss on a stick, or water flossers. These flossing tools are much faster and easier to use than regular flossing and can be purchased at most stores. After brushing, you can help prevent cavities by rinsing with a mouthwash.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1544440458796{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Watch what you eat.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1598348137831{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]The best way to protect your teeth from damage is to keep food that are detrimental to teeth or braces out. Don’t chew on ice or bubble gum.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1598261674274{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Cut back or avoid sugar completely. Sugary foods and soda rot your teeth and cause plaque that can lead to gingivitis.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column width=”1/4″][dfd_single_image image=”10167″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

Eat a well-balanced diet.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1598261701377{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Vitamins and minerals found in a healthy diet of fibre, protein, good fats and some carbohydrates will help you fight and keep gingivitis away. Eating well also sustains good health overall, which is just as important. Look for nutritious, high fibre foods like raspberries, whole grains, bananas, greens, squash and other soft fruit.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Clean your teeth after every meal

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]It may seem like a pain, but it is crucial! Gingivitis forms in 48 hours. It can happen from lack of brushing, flossing or improper technique. Not brushing after eating can also cause stains on your teeth when you get your braces off.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

5 Tips To Keep Braces Clean

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Brush in-between your teeth and the braces -[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1726224447392{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Although orthodontic braces help to improve your smile and also overall oral health, they can often also make cleaning your teeth more difficult. The level of cleaning difficulty can vary from brace type to brace type – for example, fixed metal braces are more difficult to clean than removable clear braces.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column width=”1/4″][dfd_spacer screen_wide_spacer_size=”10″ screen_normal_resolution=”1024″ screen_tablet_resolution=”800″ screen_mobile_resolution=”480″][dfd_single_image image=”10454″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]Fixed braces can make it more difficult for you to clean your teeth because the braces create nooks and corners where food particles can get stuck; enabling bacteria to grow and thrive if the area is not well cleaned with brushing. You need to pay extra attention to clean these nooks and corners as part of the daily brushing routine.

Our dentists recommend you to brush teeth twice in a day for at least two minutes each time. If you want to be extra thorough at cleaning your teeth, we even suggest you could get an interdental brush to clean teeth. The interdental brush comes with a much smaller head and helps to clean small spaces, especially the areas between your teeth and braces. If you decide to use one, you should clean your teeth for an additional two minutes using the interdental brush.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1544440458796{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1731423441351{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Floss at least once a day – In addition to brushing your teeth with a regular brush and an interdental brush, you should also floss regularly. You should thread the floss through the ortho wires of the braces so as not to edge them out of their place. You can then gently pick away bits of food debris lodged in those hard to reach areas.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1544440458796{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1597228656403{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Consider using mouthwash – We suggest investing in mouthwash that contains fluoride. The mouthwash will help you to keep your braces clean, in turn helping protect your teeth, gums and mouth. We recommend waiting at least 30 mins after brushing to use the mouthwash. Else, there is a chance you may wash away the fluoride present in the toothpaste.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1544440458796{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1600338401711{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Avoid sticky or hard foods – Some types of foods, especially the sticky types, are just not friendly to your braces. They include popcorn, apples, nuts, crusty bread, chewing gums, marshmallows, sweets, chocolates containing toffee or caramel, chewy / crunchy peanut butter. Sticky food items can sometimes get lodged in between your braces and teeth and can be difficult to remove. If they remain stuck, bacteria could grow and develop on your teeth and gums, eventually leading to tooth decay and pain. In addition, hard food items can dislodge your orthodontic wires and also damage your brackets, potentially causing them to come off. This has the potential to impact your treatment as you may need to revisit the orthodontist to have your braces hardware repaired.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_bg_style=”image” dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1587983765145{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column width=”1/4″][dfd_spacer screen_wide_spacer_size=”10″ screen_normal_resolution=”1024″ screen_tablet_resolution=”800″ screen_mobile_resolution=”480″][dfd_single_image image=”9785″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1591618641438{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Make a mobile teeth cleaning pack – In addition to cleaning your teeth at least twice a day, you could also carry a mobile cleaning pack when you are out and about outside your house. It will come handy if you are out having a meal with friends or are working long hours at the office. You can use the pack to quickly clean your teeth and braces while you are away from home. The mobile pack can include items such as a toothbrush, an interdental brush, a small sized bottle of mouthwash and floss.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1591618686927{margin-bottom: 15px !important;}”]Have regular dental check-upsDental check-ups are good practice to maintaining your oral health, where a dentist quickly checks the health of your teeth and gums. It becomes even more important while you are wearing braces to ensure your teeth remain healthy as they are being straightened.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row dfd_row_responsive_enable=”dfd-row-responsive-enable” css=”.vc_custom_1544440458796{padding-top: 20px !important;}” responsive_styles=”padding_left_mobile:15|padding_right_mobile:15″][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Some people forget that Invisalign Braces don’t just clean themselves. Your braces will need to be keep clean regularly not for the sake of taking good care of your invisalign, but also for your own oral and gum health.

There are some common myths and rumours when it comes to cleaning your Invisalign. Let’s go through the do’s and don’ts.

What You Should Do

Rinse your aligners when removed

Get in the habit of rinsing your aligns when you remove them. This will ensure that any mucus is removed, avoiding the build up of bacteria.

Clean your Invisalign

Rinsing sometimes isn’t enough. Clean your Invisalign braces regularly using a soft bristled tooth brush with clear anti-bacterial soap. This will remove any plaque or excess saliva from your braces. The toothbrush will ensure that you clean those tough to reach places within your braces.

Why You Should Care for Your Invisalign

Although you will get a new set of Invisalign braces every couple of weeks or so, it’s important that you take care of each and every brace that you obtain. Misusing your braces can cause irreparable damage to your teeth.

For many, Invisalign can be a costly process when straightening your teeth. That’s why it’s important that you follow the correct process to ensure a smooth straightening experience.

Clean your case

Ensure that you use clear anti-bacterial soap to keep your tray clean and this is when your braces will be kept when you’re eating. It is super important that you get into the habit of cleaning your Invisalign case as this can become a hot bed of bacteria.

Clean your teeth before putting your braces back in

It’s incredibly important that you either brush or floss your teeth before you reinsert your Invisalign braces. This will dispel of any food particles that could still be in your teeth. Trapping these foods in your mouth could eventually lead to tooth decay, cavities or other dental issues.

Flossing will greatly improve your dental hygiene in these circumstances also.

Soak your aligners daily

If you want to go that extra mile, you can soak your aligners daily in a small cup or lukewarm water mixed with some Invisalign cleaning crystals. You can leave them in the cup for around 10-20 minutes a day, brushing off any excess with a toothbrush.

Soaking your aligners will help eliminate any odors that may accumulate.

What You SHOULD NOT Do
Do no use toothpaste to clean your braces

Many people assume that you should clean your Invisalign with toothpaste, but this is a common misconception. Toothpaste can cause discolouration to your braces and sometimes it can create a dull looking surface on your braces, making them more visible.

Don’t use coloured soaps

Coloured soaps can stain your braces, ruining the appearance of your Invisalign altogether. It’s best to avoid any coloured soaps when cleaning your braces.

Not only can these coloured soaps ruin your braces, they can leave unpleasant tastes when you put your braces back in.
